they said there'll be peace on earth
They said there’ll be snow at Christmas.
But with the growing climate crisis, that feels less and less likely.
They said the war would be over by Christmas - it wasn’t.
They said Brexit would benefit the NHS - it hasn’t.
They said technology would bring us together - and somehow we’re lonelier than ever.
Promise after promise. All broken.
So when we hear that old line, “Peace on earth,”
It’s easy to roll our eyes.
Two thousand years later, and there’s still war, still fear, still oppression.
If that’s the kind of peace God promised, it doesn’t seem to have worked.
But maybe we’ve misunderstood what kind of peace was promised that night in Bethlehem.
When the angels sang “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace,” (Luke 2:14)
They weren’t announcing the end of all fighting.
They were declaring the arrival of the Prince of Peace.
Peace not as a treaty or a truce, but as a person.
Jesus didn’t come to patch up politics or stop every war overnight.
He came to end the deeper war — the one raging in every human heart.
The distance between us and God.
The guilt, the shame, the restlessness we all carry.
Through his life, death, and resurrection,
Jesus offers a peace that the world can’t give:
Peace with God, peace within ourselves,
And peace that begins to overflow into how we treat one another.
And one day, when he returns, that peace will fill the whole earth.
Every weapon silenced, every tear wiped away.
That’s the promise that hasn’t been broken.
It began in a manger.
It continues today in the hearts of all who trust him.
This Christmas, we’re not selling you a fairy story.
We’re offering the truth of a promise kept:
A child born to bring peace on earth, and good will to all.
